ODEON Selfie Stations

Brief

As a leading cinema operator in Europe, ODEON Cinemas Group continuously seeks innovative ways to enhance the guest experience and differentiate itself within the industry. Looking to leverage digital signage technology, ODEON engaged long-term supplier Saturn Visual Solutions to develop an interactive, engaging, and brand-aligned solution that would: enrich the atmosphere in cinema foyers, entertain guests and encourage social sharing, strengthen ODEON’s unique selling points (USPs), be robust, cost-effective, and easy to maintain.

Solution

Saturn suggested a wall-mounted ‘selfie station’ which would allow customers to take photos of themselves on a movie-specific themed background, then download the photos and share them on social media.

The stations would use touch screen displays contained within a secure, custom-made wall-mounted enclosure inspired by the ODEON logo. They would be fully accessible so they could be used by customers of different heights or in wheelchairs.

Recognising the potential of the concept, ODEON collaborated closely with Saturn to refine the design and develop engaging visuals for internal stakeholders. The idea received enthusiastic approval, leading to a fast-tracked rollout of 11 selfie stations across key sites in time for the school holidays—one of ODEON’s busiest trading periods.

This gave Saturn a four-month turnaround time to design and manufacture bespoke enclosures, design a slick, fun user experience and develop software to control the cameras and allow the photos to be taken and exported out of the system (in a GDPR-friendly way) so that users could keep them.

Within the same timeframe, the relevant film distributers also had to be contacted for endorsement of the idea and to secure licensing of their film imagery/intellectual property for use on the selfie stations. On-screen content was then subsequently created and signed off by all of the relevant parties.

Result

Within four months of being introduced at the 11 sites, ODEON’s customers had spent over 800 hours on the selfie stations and taken over 50,000 photos using them. The volume of photos taken on the stations increased month-on-month within this period.

The selfie stations have been so successful in meeting ODEON’s objectives that the company is looking to further expand their use across more sites. They are also looking to develop the idea, increasing the functionality and making the selfie stations free standing, rather than wall-mounted, so they are even more prominent within ODEON’s foyers.
